Transitional registration for supported independent living (SIL) providers closed on 30 September 2026. If a resident’s SIL provider changes, their home doesn’t have to. Here’s how DEC Housing supports residents, support coordinators and SIL providers through the change.
From 1 July 2026, SIL providers must be registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. The window to apply under transitional arrangements closed on 30 September 2026. Providers who continue to deliver SIL without registration face penalties of up to 2 years’ imprisonment, a fine of 120 penalty units, or both.
The reforms also bring new SIL Practice Standards and audit requirements, with further changes due in 2027. Most providers have been preparing for these changes for some time. Where a provider decides to step away from SIL, residents need clear information and continuity of support.
The key point for residents is that their SDA home and their SIL supports are separate arrangements.
Changing support providers can still be unsettling, especially in shared homes where housemates use the same provider. Planning early makes the difference.
When a SIL provider in one of our homes is leaving, or can no longer operate, DEC will:
If a SIL provider leaves suddenly, our first priority is making sure residents keep receiving the supports they need. Residents, with their families, nominees and support coordinators, choose who provides those supports.
If a household needs help to arrange interim supports quickly, DEC can help put a registered SIL provider in place. We always consult residents first. Any temporary arrangement lasts no more than 90 days, while residents choose a long-term provider.
DEC doesn’t deliver SIL itself, and we manage any conflict of interest in line with our policy. The full process is set out in each resident’s SDA Service Agreement.
Residents choose who provides their SIL supports, with help from their families, nominees and support coordinators. In a shared home, housemates usually need to agree on one provider, so the household makes the decision together.
DEC’s role is to support that process, not to direct it. We can help organise a household meeting, share information about what the home needs, and answer questions from prospective providers.
Once residents have chosen a provider, we work with residents, their support coordinators and the new provider to make the handover smooth. If a resident is thinking about changing SIL provider, families and support coordinators can let us know early. We’ll keep it confidential.
Each SIL provider in a DEC home has an SDA and SIL Collaboration Agreement with us, covering practical matters like access to the home, property care and safety.
If anything changes with your registration or your capacity to deliver supports, please tell us early so we can plan with residents. We also ask providers to raise property or safety issues with us promptly.
